BioNova is providing a perfect solution to an ongoing problem of dealing with source segregated food wastes arising from 32 catering operations on the Mermaid Quay site in Cardiff Bay.
The solution is based on a Bionova C5 aerobic digester which is equipped with a shredder and is designed for easy loading to run continuously to process the food wastes with the minimum amount of operator intervention.
The BioNova C5 will be used to purely reduce weight and volume of the food waste. This in turn will dramatically cut the number of bin lifts and collection costs for Mermaid quay. It also reduces the health hazard element, by eliminating the raw food waste going to Landfill.
The Bionova digester is a continuous process taking in food wastes via a shredding system and it then processes the material using special enzymes and heat to break down the organic fraction of the waste to produce a dry residue or ‘digestate’ it does all of this in less than 24 hours.
The C5 model is designed to process 3,000 – 5,000 litres (approximately 2,000kg – 3,500kg) of food wastes per week.
With cost savings – less operating costs – of £15,954 per annum, the benefits to Mermaid Quay speaks volumes – and it will also have a positive impact in environmental terms, too.
